An Improved Surgical Approach for Complete Interhemispheric Corpus Callosotomy Combined with Extended Frontoparietal Craniotomy in Mice

چکیده

Callosotomy is an invasive method that used to study the role of interhemispheric functional connectivity in brain. This surgical approach technically demanding perform small laboratory animals, such as rodents, due several methodological challenges. To date, there exist two main approaches for transecting corpus callosum (CC) rodents: trephine hole(s) or unilateral craniotomy, which cause damage cerebral cortex injury large vessels, and may lead intracranial hemorrhage animal death. presents improved complete callosotomy mice using combined with bilateral extended craniotomy across midline. demonstrated provided visual space required hemisphere sinus retraction, thus keeping blood vessels surrounding brain structures intact under microscope standardized instruments. We also emphasized importance good post-operative care leading increase overall survival following experimentation. optimized avoids extracallosal tissue medium- large-sized vessel mice, can provide higher reproducibility/validity among animals when revealing CC various neurological pathologies.

Cortical and subcortical interhemispheric interactions following partial and complete callosotomy.

T he corpus callosum is the largest fiber tract in the human brain, and plays a critical role in many aspects of interhemispheric integration. Much has been learned about the structure and connectivity of this fiber tract through anatomical studies on a variety of species. The functional implications of these anatomical findings are supported by behavioral studies on monkeys and humans with les...

A precision surgical approach for complete or partial callosotomy in the mouse.

The corpus callosum (CC) of mice was completely transsected with a thin tungsten knife using a three-cut approach through the dorsal cerebrum just lateral to midline. This method results in almost total transsection of the CC throughout its entire rostrocaudal extent. Advantages of this approach include minimal bleeding and extracallosal damage as well as the possibility of selective transsecti...

Lamotrigine after corpus callosotomy

Corpus callosotomy (CC) has been employed in the management of intractable epilepsy since 1940’ and should be considered for patients with generalized falling seizures with physical injury, recurrent life-threatening generalized convulsive status epilepticus or atypical absence status’. CC is especially useful in improving seizure control in patients with tonic and atonic seizures3 and those wi...

Reinventing the corpus callosotomy.

Surgical section of the corpus callosum is an old operation. It was first performed to treat epilepsy more than 75 years ago. Early procedures often consisted of a “total commissurotomy,” performed through a right frontoparietal craniotomy, with division of the entire corpus callosum, the ipsilateral fornix, the anterior commissure, and even the massa intermedia of the thalamus. Subsequently, s...

The transected part of the corpus callosum is indicated in red in the sagittal planes (top left panel) and the anatomical regions of S1 and V1 are highlighted in 3D atlas space (bottom left panel). At d...
